Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy & Pain Relief
PEMF Therapy and Pain Relief
Dr. Oz called PEMF Therapy one of the biggest breakthroughs in pain management that he has ever seen. PEMF = Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy in 2011.
Approximately 30% of the world has to deal with some degree of chronic pain. This is more than cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined. Pain is the most common reason that people seek medical help - yet it remains one of the most neglected and misunderstood areas of healthcare. One in four Australians lives with chronic pain. This prevalence rises to one in three people over the age of 65. The most common forms of pain are:
Low back pain (27%) – approximately 8 out of 10 people with have back
problems at some point in their life
Severe headache or migraine (15%)
Neck pain (15%)
Facial pain (4%)
Fibromyalgia (pain in many different muscles and bones) - (2% - 6%),
which mainly affects young to middle-aged women.
Pain is vital because it signals that something is wrong in the body.
PEMF Therapy helps to reduce or relieve pain by:
increasing endorphins (body's natural opiate), serotonin, and other hormones, which helps to relieve pain
temporarily interrupting the pain signal, therefore less signal equals less pain
shortening the time it takes for the body to heal the affected area causing the pain
reducing inflammation... the precursor to pain
Increasing oxygen, water and nutrient absorption
improving the elimination of toxins in the cells
PEMF, which uses pulsed electromagnetic frequency technology, increases the charge of each cell in the tissues of the body. This commonly takes the cell’s membrane up to the threshold voltage that allows the outer cell wall to become more permeable. This is its healthy state of function. It also enables the cells to circulate and absorb nutrients better, to move blood-oxygen through the cell membrane and helps cells to detoxify.
With chronic pain reduction, PEMF can be used as an electrotherapeutic. It helps to improve blood circulation, not by increasing blood pressure or heartbeat, but by optimizing energy of the very cells in the capillaries and arteries. Improved circulation also alleviates pain by reducing oedema (swelling), regenerating diseased and damaged tissue and repairing fractured and torn bones and tendons. The body’s natural magnetic field is formed through the transmission of electric impulses through cell membranes and the flow of electrically charged ions in and out of cells.
Only a pulsed electromagnetic field force (generated by a PEMF device) and not static magnets can produce electrical variations on a cellular level in the body for cell metabolism to be influenced. Additionally, static magnets only generate continuous low levels of magnetic induction. PEMF delivers an extremely high intensity, short duration electromagnetic pulse combined with several frequencies. This results in a magnetic field that penetrates completely through muscles and joints. Consequently, it may reduce pain faster and has long-term benefit.
Some PEMF devices, like the iMRS, use low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields (100 Hz or less), which offers a very effective method of treating and significantly reducing chronic pain. PEMF devices also fall within the fast-developing field of bioelectronics or energy medicine. PEMF is very effective using low-frequency, low-intensity electromagnetic waveforms (earth-based or within the biological window) that resonate with bodily tissues that have evolved and resonated with the lower earth frequencies.
PEMF therapy devices have been accepted for use in many countries around the world.
The US FDA accepted the use of PEMF therapy devices in the healing of:
non-union bone fractures in 1979
urinary incontinence and muscle stimulation in 1998
depression and anxiety in 2006.
one form of brain tumour (GMB) in 2015
Israel has accepted the use of PEMF devices for migraine headaches.
Health Canada has certified the iMRS PEMF device for use.
The European Union has many acceptances for the use of PEMF therapy in many
areas including healing and recovery from trauma, degeneration and the treatment
of the pain and range of motion issues.
